If you like chocolate malts, you are going to love the malted hot cocoa. It has those caramelly notes and extra richness without any extra effort.

We love a good hot chocolate recipe around here. We have been making our own hot chocolate mix and white hot chocolate mix for years.

I had some extra malted milk powder after making chocolate malt cookies in a jar and I just knew it would be a great addition to hot chocolate. It is wonderful in milkshakes after all, why not bring it into our winter drink repertoire?

Let me tell you, that was a wonderful decision. This hot cocoa is so good!

Usually I prefer hot chocolate made with milk because it is richer and has a better mouthfeel. This mix gives you all of that even when you make it with hot water.

The best part is, all you need is a mixing bowl and a whisk to make it. Usually we need a blender or food processor to get the chocolate bars into a fine powder.

This is truly a hot cocoa recipe that gets all of its chocolate flavor from cocoa powder. So, it is even easier to make and more affordable too.

As written, one batch makes 6 cups of mix or about 24 mugs of hot cocoa. Keep them all for yourself or give a couple of jars as a tasty gift. Anyone would be happy to get some!

Ingredient Notes

  • If you can find whole milk powdered milk, that will give you a richer hot chocolate. I love using it in recipes like this. If you have non-fat milk powder, it will still be good just not as rich.
  • Make sure you use malted milk powder, not the malt you use for baking things like bagels.
