Substitutions and Alterations

We like using whole milk for this recipe. It’s the perfect mix of being creamy without being too heavy.

However, feel free to use whatever milk you have on hand. If you like really creamy hot chocolate you can use half and half.

If you have skim milk, or a non-dairy alternative, they should work too. Use what you have, it is sure to be tasty with any of them.

For a hit of caffeine, add a shot of espresso or some strong brewed coffee. Then you will have a copycat white chocolate peppermint mocha. Yum!

If you like a stronger mint flavor, feel free to add more. Just be careful as it is easy to go overboard on mint extracts, so start with the recipe as written and add just a drop or two at a time if you want more.

You could also change up the flavor all together. Instead of peppermint you could use orange, coffee or a variety of extracts.

Tips and Tricks

This recipe is really super simple to make, so there aren’t a whole lot of pointers to share. However, there are two things to keep in mind to ensure the best hot chocolate.

The first is you want to warm the hot chocolate up over low to medium-low heat. You don’t want to scorch the chocolate or scald the milk.

The second is to stir frequently. You don’t want the white chocolate to stick to the bottom of the pot and this will help to get a nice creamy result.

Once the milk is steamy and the white chocolate is melted, it is ready to serve.

We like ours topped with whipped cream and chopped candy canes. But you can serve it plain, with marshmallows or however you like your hot chocolate.
