Monster Cookie Mix In A Jar

Monster cookie mix in a jar is a great way to shortcut making some of our absolute favorite cookies. Make up several jars to keep in your pantry or give them as gifts to teachers, neighbors, family and friends.

I couldn’t do a series on making homemade mixes in a jar and not include our favorite cookies. We LOVE our big batch monster cookie recipe.

Of course, it is WAY to large to fit into a reasonable sized jar. So, we had to scale it down a bit. Luckily if 32 cookies isn’t enough, you can just make more than one jar!

We just love the chewy texture the peanut butter and oatmeal give to Monster cookies. You can use holiday M&Ms to make them even more festive if you want.

Assembling the jars is super simple. I like to stir the baking powder, baking soda, and salt into the sugar in order to reduce the risk of getting a clump in the actual cookies later.

We tried filling up the jars a couple of different ways. Obviously, the order you put the ingredients in the jar doesn’t really affect what the cookies taste like.

However, we decided it looked best if you broke the oatmeal up into two sections. Otherwise the oatmeal layer is very thick and the jar isn’t quite as visually pleasing.

If you are giving the jars as gifts, you can use cute ribbons or even add some festive fabric over the lid. If you are keeping them for your pantry, you are done.

Just make sure to include the baking instructions. We like to write them on little brown cardboard tags so that they are cute and easy.

There are so many reasons that making your own mixes is a great idea. Whether you are looking for a hostess gift or a little something to pass out at Christmas time, there is no bad time for cookies.

Filling The Jars

  • Using wide mouth jars makes both loading them and emptying them a little bit easier.
  • Canning funnels usually only cost a couple of dollars and they can make getting everything in the jar so much easier.
  • The jar will be really full, so you may have to pack the layers down a bit as you go.

Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 0 minutes
Total: 5 minutes

Ingredients

Monster Cookie Mix

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • cup old fashioned oats
  • ¾ cup M&Ms
  • ½ cup light brown sugar packed
  • ¼ cup chocolate chips

To Make The Cookies

  • ¾ cup peanut butter
  • 2 Tablespoons butter softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs

Instructions

To Make The Mix

  • In a small bowl, stir together the ½ cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and ½ teaspoon salt. Pour into the bottom of a quart jar.
  • Layer on 1 cup of the rolled oats.
  • Continue layering, adding the ¾ cup M&Ms, ½ cup light brown sugar, and ¼ cup chocolate chips. Pack the layers down as you go to make sure there is enough room for everything.
  • Finish with the remaining 1¼ cups of oats.
  • Place the lid on the jar and tie a tag onto the jar with the baking instructions.

Making The Cookies

  • Preheat the oven to 350℉.
  • In a medium bowl, cream together the ¾ cup peanut butter and 2 Tablespoons butter.
  • Add the 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 2 large eggs. Stir to combine.
  • Pour in the contents of the jar and stir until the mixture is uniform. It should form a thick dough.
  • Scoop a rounded Tablespoon of dough onto a cookie. Continue scooping the dough, leaving 2 inches between each mound of dough until the sheet is full. Bake for 9-11 minutes.
  • Cool for a couple of minutes on the tray before moving to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

These homemade mixes can be kept in the pantry for 6-9 months. So you can make a bunch ahead of time if you would like.
You can use all M&M or all chocolate chips if you want to. I like having a bit of color, but also like using some mini chocolate chips to distribute chocolate throughout. If you like nuts or raisins in your monster cookies, you can use them in place of the extra chocolate chips.
