Marshmallow Fluff Frosting

Marshmallow fluff frosting has everything you love about American buttercream with a marshmallow twist. It tastes like a marshmallow but spreads nicely, has a great texture, works on layer cakes and is even good for piping. Frosting Love

By now I think we all know that I am a frosting fan.  I love to make the stuff and I really love to eat it!  

I mean that is the whole point of making a cake, isn’t it?  I feel like it is hard to go wrong with deliciously plain old buttercream, but sometimes you want to amp it up a bit, am I right? 

The super light and fluffy white chocolate buttercream is an excellent example.  So is sweetened condensed milk buttercream. Both add a bit of something extra without taking away the things I love about American buttercream. 

So it makes sense that I would need to keep finding new ways to make buttercream even better. This marshmallow fluff frosting is a perfect example of that.

What Does Marshmallow Fluff Frosting Go With?

So many things! Pretty much anything you would use a vanilla buttercream on would go well with the frosting.

I originally made this frosting to go on top of some pumpkin spice cookie bars. The marshmallow was a great topper and played well with the warm tones of the bars. 

Recently I made a layered pink velvet cake. I filled it with blood orange curd and frosted it in a double batch of this frosting.

It was a fun burst of childhood with the pretty color, soft cake, and fun frosting. It reminded me of a snack cake, but with epic proportions.

I decided to go with a pink ombre effect on my layer cake and I thought it turned out pretty well.  The best part is it tasted even better than it looked. 

If you want to try this super yummy frosting, but don’t want to make a big cake, try it on copycat oatmeal creme pie bars. They taste just like the Little Debbie snack, but they are in bar form so they are super simple to make. 

In fact, I think that might be my favorite use of this frosting. There is something about the rich molasses and oatmeal cookies mixed with this yummy buttercream that is extra tasty.

For a similar reason, it is perfect on a Christmas tree cheesecake. The flavor and texture just really gives off snack cake vibes.

They are nostalgic in the best kind of way. You should make some to see for yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you store marshmallow fluff frosting?

This buttercream can be stored at room temperature for two to three days.  Just make sure to keep it covered so it doesn’t form a crust.  

For longer storage, place in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks or freeze for up to two months. Just bring the frosting to room temperature and whip before using.  

What if you don’t have marshmallow fluff?

Marshmallow Fluff Buttercream

Marshmallow fluff frosting is perfect for cakes, cookies, and more. It reminds me of the filling of our favorite snack cakes. Make a double batch to frost a layered cake, or use written for a 9×13-inch cake. We love it on oatmeal cream pie bars, or it would be amazing as a filling for whoopie pies.

Total: 8 minutes

Ingredients 

  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 7 oz marshmallow fluff

Instructions 

  • In your mixer bowl, cream the 1 cup butter until it is light and fluffy.  (Go ahead and let it go for a minimum of 2 minutes.)
  • Add in the 2 cups powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 7 oz marshmallow fluff and mix on low until incorporated. Turn the mixer to medium speed and beat for about 4 minutes.
  • Spread on your cooled dessert or store in an airtight container until ready to use.

    This is almost the same recipe as the one I use for my Whoopie pie filling – just add a little more icing sugar and vanilla – it’s one of the most requested fillings for my Whoopies and I’m sure it would be so yummy on cakes or as a filling for a tiered cake.

    1. It would make a great whoopie pie filling! We really like it on oatmeal cream pie bars and in cookie sandwiches as well.

    Been making this for years! Try add about a 1/2 cup peanut butter for a fluffernutter frosting! Its delish!

    1. It does hold up really well. You can adjust the consistency just like a standard American buttercream and use it for spreading or piping. I hope you enjoy it!
