If you are looking for a fun new sweet snack mix, you are in the right place. This recipe combines crunchy cereal, creamy white baking chips and sprinkle filled cake mix into a snackable package.

Puppy chow has always been a favorite treat for my family. Despite the name, it is not intended for dogs, it is a sweet snack mix that is also called muddy buddies.

The classic puppy chow recipe is made with chocolate, peanut butter, Chex cereal, and powdered sugar. That version is still among the favorites, but there are so many ways to change it up.

Cookie butter puppy chow was a fast favorite that has made appearances at everything from bike races to move night. There is also s’mores puppy chow and lemon puppy chow too.

One of the most popular puppy chow recipes on the site is brownie batter puppy chow. So, I thought it would be fun to do a birthday cake twist on that idea.

This recipe uses candy melts for the creamy vanilla flavor. Then there are more sprinkles for even more colorful fun.

If you are making this sweet snack mix for a themed party, match the sprinkle colors to the party colors. It is an easy way to make it even more festive.

So, go ahead and make a batch (or two!) I know it is going to be a hit.

How to Heat-Treat Cake Mix

We have always known there was some risk involved in eating raw cookie dough and cake batter from the raw eggs. But in recent years we have become more aware of the bacteria that can be present in raw flour and cake mixes.

However, you can mitigate that risk by “heat-treating” the mix. Luckily, it’s super simple and takes just a minute or two. Here’s how…

  • Dump the mix into a glass microwave safe bowl.
  • Microwave on high for about 1 to 1 ½ minutes, stirring every 20 seconds.
  • The cake mix will be warm (160F) and any bacteria that were present will be gone!
  • Let the mix cool completely before adding to the recipe.

Storage

Once the candy coating is set, puppy chow can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. As long as it doesn’t get warm or too much humidity, it will likely stay perfectly crunchy past that. You can refrigerate or freeze it if you want, but we never have it around long enough to necessitate that.
