Plate of homemade beef and broccoli lo mein with chop sticks, ready for dinner.

If you are looking for an easy dinner idea, you are in the right place. This beef and broccoli lo mein recipe has Asian inspired flavors and only takes about 30 minutes to make.

The method is really simple. If you are using fresh broccoli, you just cook it with the pasta.

That way there is no extra dirty dishes and no added cook time. If you prefer frozen broccoli, that is fine too.

Just cook it according to the package directions and toss it in. It is great either way.

While the noodles and broccoli are cooking, sear off the beef. This is a great time to start cooking the carrot too.

After that, all that is left to do is add the sauce. While it does take a few ingredients, it is super simple to make.

The sweet and savory flavors with soy sauce and garlic make it amazing. Allow it to cook so that it sticks to everything.

The sauce is what really makes everything sing. If you want, sprinkle on a few sesame seeds at the end and dinner is ready!

Spaghetti Works Too

If you don’t have lo mein noodles, or you can’t find them at the grocery store, just use spaghetti instead. Dinner will still be delicious.

You could also use glass noodles or another version of rice noodles if you want to.

Make It Your Own

Feel free to use this as a base recipe to make it however you want. You can use your favorite veggies or protein to make it yours.

It would be wonderful with snap peas either in addition to or instead of the broccoli. Even zucchini would be delicious.

Or add some shredded cabbage like I did in my pork chow mein. You can add a ton and it kind of melts in.

It would also be wonderful with ground pork or some chicken if you prefer. Or you could leave the meat out an make it vegetarian.

No matter how you decide to make it, just do yourself a favor and give it a try. I think you will love it.

Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 20 minutes
Total: 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces lo mein noodles
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 Tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 Tablespoons neutral cooking oil
  • 8 ounces thinly sliced beef
  • 1 large carrot shredded
  • sesame seeds and/or green onions for garnish optional

Instructions

  • Fill a large pot with water and let it come to a boil. Add the 8 ounces lo mein noodles. Cook the noodles according to the package. Add the 3 cups broccoli florets about halfway through. Once the noodles are done, drain both the noodles and broccoli and set aside.
  • In a small bowl, stir together the 3 cloves garlic, 2 Tablespoons hoisin sauce, ¼ cup soy sauce, ¼ cup light brown sugar, ¼ teaspoon ground ginger, ½ teaspoon ground black pepper and ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes.
  • Add the 2 Tablespoons neutral cooking oil, 1 large carrot and 8 ounces thinly sliced beef to a large skillet. Cook on a medium to high heat for 5-8 minutes or until the steak is cooked to your liking.
  • Add the broccoli and noodles on top of the steak and stir, add the sauce to the pan and stir until it’s fully coated.
  • Sprinkle with chopped scallions and/or sesame seeds on top and serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.
  • You can drizzle a chili sauce over top for extra spice!
  • Freeze the steak and let it thaw halfway through so it’s easier to slice into thin strips!
  • You can use frozen broccoli just steam in the microwave beforehand instead of boiling it.
