Magic cookie bars are a favorite old-fashioned dessert. The recipe is easy to make with chocolate chips, coconut, pecans, and condensed milk baked on a graham cracker crust.

Our family tends to enjoy these magic cookie bars at Christmas time, but there is nothing stopping you from making them any time of year. They are a fabulous layered bar that is super simple but oh so delicious.
This is the latest recipe to come out of our lunchtime recipe circle. We were discussing recipes that we love, and these magic cookie bars came up.
Of course, I was familiar. However, my aunt Donna is the one that normally makes them for the holidays.
So, though I have eaten them many times, I have not had the opportunity to bake a batch and share the recipe with you. Luckily, the guys at work were excited about the chance to eat them if I baked them, so here we are.
What Are Magic Cookie Bars?
Magic cookie bars are incredibly decadent, yet shockingly easy to make. The dessert consists of a graham cracker crust topped with layers of sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, flaked coconut, and chopped nuts.
This recipe is a slight adaptation from the recipe in an old Eagle brand condensed milk recipe booklet I have. It has more coconut than the original and slightly different directions.

Pressing everything down into the sweetened condensed milk helps it to stay together after it has baked. Don’t worry, they still have a great texture and won’t be too dense.
Substitutions and Additions
We love this classic magic cookie bar recipe, but there are so many ways you can switch it up.
Magic Peanut Cookie Bars: Use peanut butter chips in place of some or all of the chocolate chips and peanuts in place of the pecans. The bars will instantly transform into a peanut butter lover’s dream come true.
Magic Rainbow Cookie Bars: Substitute 2 cups of plain M&M’s for the semisweet chocolate chips for a pop of color. Using holiday M&M’s instantly dresses them up for the occasion.

7-Layer Magic Cookie Bars: Substitute butterscotch-flavored chips for half of the semisweet chocolate chips.

Chocolate Magic Cookie Bars: Use Oreo crumbs instead of graham cracker crumbs for even more chocolate goodness.
Kitchen Sink Magic Cookie Bars: Add about a cup each of crushed pretzels and caramel bits on top of the coconut.
How to Store Magic Cookie Bars
Store your cookie bars in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days or in the refrigerator for up to one week.
For longer storage, freeze tightly wrapped magic cookie bars for up to three months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

More Recipes to Try
If you love these bars, you are going to go crazy for magic cookie bar pie. It has all of these flavors in pie form!
For extra chocolate goodness, try using brownie mix with condensed milk to make the thickest, fudgiest brownies of your life. They have a bit of caramel-like goodness baked inside.
If you like easy dessert bars, especially ones that feature pecans, you are going to love pecan dream bars or a batch of pecan pie bars.
