Turn extra hot chocolate mix into an easy and creamy hot chocolate pudding. This recipe only requires 3 ingredients (4 if you count the water) and is ready in less than 10 minutes.

Creamy chocolate pudding is such a comforting snack. This recipe uses hot chocolate mix as a base and it is so easy you may just memorize the recipe so you can make it at a moment’s notice when your sweet tooth attacks.
If you are like us, you stock the pantry with hot chocolate supplies during the winter. It is the perfect way to warm up when you are chilled to the bone.

We usually make a batch of two of homemade hot chocolate mix and some white hot chocolate mix as well. Though store-bought mixes work perfectly for this recipe as well.
Just pick your favorite kind and your pudding is sure to be delicious. It is a great way to use up whatever you have left when the cold weather has moved on.
Carlee’s Tips and Tricks
This recipe could not be simpler. In fact, I have been making pudding like this for years without measuring the ingredients.
I finally measured everything out so I could share this tasty treat with you. It is too yummy and too easy not to share.
You can use whatever kind of milk you have on hand. However, whole milk will give you the creamiest results.

You will feel the mixture start to thicken as it gets closer to a boil. Once it starts bubbling consistently, you can remove the mixture from the heat.

At that point the pudding should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. It will thicken up further as it cools.
Ladle it into serving dishes while it is warm and then refrigerate them until you are ready to serve. If you don’t want a skin to form, place plastic wrap on the surface of the pudding before you chill it.
I really like warm pudding. So, I always enjoy some right away too. There is just something extra comforting about warm chocolate or rice pudding that draws me in.
Eat the pudding plain or top it with a dollop of whipped cream. A smattering of chocolate sprinkles or mini chocolate chips is fun too.
For a real hot chocolate vibe, you could even add some mini marshmallows or a sprinkling of crushed candy canes. Let your heart be your guide!

What is the difference between custard and pudding?
Custard and pudding are both thickened sweetened milk desserts that enjoyed in a similar fashion. The difference is what is used to thicken them. Custards use eggs to thicken the milk mixture whereas pudding uses cornstarch or flour.

Like a few of the other commenters (except for all of the anonymous August 19, 2023 ratings 😅🤔), I ended up with a nice chocolate soup. It definitely was boiling. I had bubbles going for a full 20 minutes before I finally gave up. I should have made a slurry first, I know better.
That is so strange. We made a batch last night and it worked well. I am not sure what the difference could be. (And the ratings being on that date is because I switched recipe cards on that day and it pulled rating from the old card.)
I tried making this ended up with chocolate soup. I did heat it up till it was boiling rolling added a little bit more corn starch i don’t have enough of hot chocolate mix to add to it. Needed a pudding not a soup
That’s really strange. The cornstarch should have thickened it up nicely. I wish I could help troubleshoot, but I am not sure how it could have happened. I wonder if it would thicken as it cools.

Thank you!
I tried this recipe and wound up with “hot chocolate gazpacho”, just a cold chocolate soup with absolutely ZERO pudding qualities. I have a feeling that the liquid amounts in this recipe are WAY off.
4 Tablespoons of cornstarch to 4 cups of liquid is correct. Did you get it hot enough to bubble? It doesn’t need a rolling boil, but it does need the heat to be high enough to thicken properly.
I’m wondering if you might do better to use the cornstarch in a slurry or perhaps using 3 cups milk and 1 water might get a thicker result?
I’m going to give it try I think and I’ll gladly report my results 😁
I don’t think that making a slurry will change the result much, but it shouldn’t hurt anything. More milk is always good, so that should work wonderfully! I can’t wait to hear how it goes.
Excellent 👍 I did add more hot chocolate mix and more cornstarch. Psst…and a drizzle of hersheys syrup. 😉
Great idea!
How long should I mix it over heat?
Until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. It will seem like it isn’t doing anything for a while and then all of the sudden it starts to go. You’ll feel it when it starts getting thicker.
Made this and love it! Just curious how long it stays good for?
Oh, good! It can keep it in the refrigerator for about a week.
I tried it and it was really good! It’s also very easy! You can taste the cornstarch quite a bit, but I don’t mind it too much. I’ve already made this 3 times. 4/5
I am glad you liked it enough to make it several times!
I had doubts, but it was delicious. (And easy!)
I am so glad you liked it!
Well, isn’t this the most fun pudding ever! And so comforting, I’m going to make this when my boys come home this Fall.
Yay! I hope they like it!
