We love making our own homemade hot chocolate mix. It is simple to do, and you can store it in jars in the pantry.

That way, we have homemade hot cocoa any time we want throughout the winter. Plus, it makes great gifts.

Sometimes, we go a bit overboard, though, and make too much. Then we love having easy recipes to use it in that aren’t just making hot chocolate.

Hot chocolate mix pudding is a great example, and so is hot chocolate mix ice cream. Or white hot chocolate mix cookies if you want something baked.

This hot chocolate dip is another great example. Of course, you can make it with store bought hot chocolate mix or even cocoa powder if you want something less sweet.

Hot Chocolate Dip Toppings

The dip is great on its own, but adding a few toppings makes it that much more fun. You can adjust the toppings to your taste preferences or dress it up for a party.

We kept it simple with mini marshmallows, as that is how we tend to enjoy a cup of cocoa. However, here are some more ideas:

  • mini marshmallows
  • crushed candy canes or peppermints
  • a drizzle of hot fudge sauce
  • chopped peppermint bark
  • crushed graham crackers
  • mini chocolate chips

Substitutions

Dessert dips are nice because they aren’t too fussy, and they can be easily adjusted to what you have on hand. Here are a few easy ways to change it up:

If you don’t have any hot cocoa mix, use some cocoa powder. Start by adding a couple of Tablespoons and keep adding until you get the flavor you want.

You can use cream cheese in place of either the cool whip or the marshmallow fluff. Beat it first, then stir in the other ingredients.

It will be more dense, like a cheesecake dip, but still delicious.

Homemade whipped cream works in place of the Cool Whip. Just whip it and then fold in the other ingredients.
