Whether you need a dip for tortilla chips, a topping for tacos, or just a little something to jazz up your scrambled eggs in the morning, salsa is just the thing. Luckily, homemade salsa is easy to make.

I have been making a homemade salsa with roasted veggies for years. Giving the veggies a little char adds a nice layer of flavor.

However, it does require turning on the oven, which isn’t always at the top of my list of things to do when it is hot out.

This recipe skips that step giving it an extra fresh flavor. If you like the salsa you are served at most Mexican restaurants, you are going to love this recipe!

During the summer, we have tons of fresh tomatoes. So, I like to make it that way.

However, you can also make it with canned tomatoes. That means homemade salsa is just a few minutes away all year long.

Making it yourself means you can control the ingredients. You can adjust the spice up and down or add more or less cilantro or garlic depending on your preferences.

Carlee’s Tips and Tricks

You can make this salsa with your favorite processing equipment. A blender, immersion blender, or food processor work well.

If using an immersion blender, use a container with high sides to prevent the mess from splatter.

For more heat, use a hotter pepper. Serrano are a good option.

For less heat, reduce the amount of jalapeno or remove the seeds. You can even replace some of them with no-heat peppers or mild chilis if you prefer.

Sauce style tomatoes like roma tomatoes are perfect for making salsa. If you are using a juicier tomato, you may want to drain them a bit before using them.

Tomato skins don’t bother me in recipes like this. So, I tend to not peel them. If you don’t like the skins, peel the tomatoes before blending.

If you use canned tomatoes, get unseasoned diced tomatoes. That way you can adjust the flavors to your liking without having to work around what’s already been done in the factory. You may want to use less salt as well as some is likely already in the can.

The salsa will be good straight from the blender. However, like most sauces, the flavors will meld some after a few hours in the fridge making it even better.

Alright, it’s time to make some salsa. I hope you have plenty of tortilla chips ready!

Restaurant Style Blender Salsa

Author: Carlee
Servings: 28 ¼ cups servings (7 cups)
Make your own salsa in about 5 minutes with the help of your blender. This restaurant style salsa is super simple to make and is perfect with tortilla chips. Of course it is also wonderful as a condiment with so many Tex-Mex favorites as well.
Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 0 minutes
Total: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 30 ounces Roma tomatoes
  • 3 jalapenos
  • 1 medium onion red preferred, but any will work
  • 5 Tablespoons lime juice
  • cup fresh cilantro
  • 1 Tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 Tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 Tablespoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon granulated sugar

Instructions

  • Wash and core 30 ounces Roma tomatoes.
  • Peel and quarter 1 medium onion. Remove the stems from 3 jalapenos. (Remove the seeds and ribs as well for a milder salsa.)
  • Add the veggies to a blender or food processor along with 5 Tablespoons lime juice, ⅓ cup fresh cilantro, 1 Tablespoon minced garlic, 1 Tablespoon ground cumin, 1 Tablespoon salt, and 1 Tablespoon granulated sugar.
  • Pulse until you reach your desired consistency. Taste and adjust the seasonings to your liking.
  • Place in airtight container and chill for 20-30 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • If you don’t have sauce tomatoes, you may want to remove some of the juicy pulp from the tomatoes before processing.
  • You can use canned diced tomatoes in place of fresh tomatoes. Use two 14.5 oz cans. Drain one and leave the juice in the second one. Start by adding half of the salt and taste before adding more.
  • If using an immersion blender, use a container with high sides to keep the splatter down.
  • You can keep this salsa in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days.
