If you are looking for a quick and easy dinner idea that the whole family will love, Davey Crockett sandwiches are just the thing. They are creamy, cheesy, meaty and delicious.

I’ll be honest, when I first stumbled on a recipe for Davey Crockett sandwiches, I didn’t know what to think. Everything about them screams Midwest and vintage.
They are far from photogenic, but there was something about them that did sound tasty. It is basically a crumbled ground beef filling with a cheesy sauce.
It’s almost like a sloppy joe, but with a cream of mushroom and cheese sauce instead of a tomato one. Or maybe like a chopped cheese sandwich that left New York City and got twisted up in a Midwestern grandma’s kitchen.

Either way, no matter how hard you try, it’s hard not to love something with cream of mushroom soup or Velveeta. So, you know it is going to be something when you use both.
Just pile the cheesy meat mixture on a bun and you are good to go. These Davy Crockett sandwiches are extra delicious with a slice of tomato on top, but we didn’t have any this day.

I tried looking into the origin of the name, but didn’t find anything. I suppose the recipe is just the hero of the dinner table.
So if you are looking for a super fast dinner option and you want something a little more than a maid right sandwich, this might be just the thing to try!

I have been making Davy Crockett sandwiches for the past 45 plus years. The recipe is an oldie but a goodie 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊😊😊
That is fun! They are relatively new to us but I’m glad we found them!
Made this today for lunch. Instead of Velveeta, I used 4 oz cream cheese and 4 oz sharp cheddar, because really don’t think has much flavor. Definitely putting in the make again.
That sounds tasty!
Would this be a good filling for Runza or Perogy and would you be able to freeze them
That’s a really fun idea! I do think it would work well. I don’t see why you couldn’t freeze it.
I’ve been making this exact sandwich for 30 plus years, and never knew what they were called. But they are delicious, and a nice break from sloppy joes
Aren’t they good? I’m glad you have a name for them now!
Made this last night – it was so good my husband said he never ever wanted a sloppy joe again – only this. It’s easy, quick and delicious.
I love that so much!
Just a thought and wanting your opinion. How do you think this mixture would be in Bell peppers?
Thank you
Debbie
That is a great idea! I’ll bet it would be wonderful and low carb too.
This reminds me of my mother’s SOS served on toast. Also my mother used to make this except she also mixed it with cooked macaroni. It made a good casserole served on cool nights in the winter time. Good memories!
Oooh, I’m doing macaroni next time. That sounds good!
What is the side pictured with your sandwiches? I am curious lol.
Aldi had some frozen heart shaped potato puffs around Valentines Day. So, we picked up a few bags and thought they would be a fun side with them instead of fries or tots.
Do you use the white velveeta or the orange?
I used the orange, but I think the white would be delicious!
Can you use a different cream soup? I don’t care for mushrooms.
Sure! Pretty much any cream soup would work. Just use your favorite.
cream of bacon is good for those who don’t like mushrooms
that would be delicious!
