This classic Chex mix recipe is perfect.  Each piece is coated with savory seasoned goodness, and it is baked to crisp perfection.

There are no little packets of mix to remember, just simple ingredients you are likely to already have in your pantry. It is good for holiday gatherings, parties, road trip snacks, and more.

Chex mix is another one of my family’s Christmas staples.  My grandma used to make huge tubs of it for when we were all around.

My mom makes it every year, too.  My brother Clint can eat his weight in it.

My brother K.C. says Chex Mix is his favorite Christmas cookie! 😉

I remember getting out the Chex mix pan and making it every year.  You coat the goodies in seasonings and butter, then bake it, stirring every so often until it is just right.

So imagine my surprise when all of the Chex mix recipes had you “bake” it in the microwave!  Not my Chex mix!

I had the official Chex mix pan out and ready to go.  I wasn’t turning to the microwave now.  So, I finally found a recipe and made it the way I remembered it.  Yum!

Storage

Make sure to cool your Chex mix completely, then transfer it to airtight containers. It can be stored at room temperature for a couple of weeks.

If you have made more than you can eat in a few weeks, you can put some in freezer bags and freeze it for later.

Make It Your Own

If you like different crackers, cereal or whatever in your Chex mix have fun playing with the exact items you put in. Mixed nuts are a great option in place of peanuts.

You can use oyster crackers in place of the cheese crackers. Or try using bagel chips or rye chips if you can find them.

If you don’t like something, just substitute a similar amount of something else. Just make sure it is something crunchy that will go with the flavors of this snack mix.

This classic Chex mix is perfect. Each pieces is coated with savory seasoned goodness and it is baked to crisp perfection. There are no little packets of mix to remember, just simple ingredients you are likely to already have in your pantry. It is good for holiday gatherings, parties, road trip snacks and more.
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 1 hour
Total: 1 hour 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 6 Tablespoons butter
  • 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 3 cups corn Chex
  • 3 cups rice Chex
  • 3 cups wheat Chex
  • 1 cup peanuts
  • 2 cups pretzels
  • 2 cups cheese crackers

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 250°F
  • Place 6 Tablespoons butter in the bottom of a large roasting pan. Put in oven until butter is melted.
  • Add the 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 1½ teaspoons seasoned salt, 1 teaspoon garlic powder and ½ teaspoon onion powder to the melted butter and stir to combine.
  • Stir in 3 cups corn Chex, 3 cups rice Chex, 3 cups wheat Chex, 1 cup peanuts, 2 cups pretzels, and 2 cups cheese crackers until everything is coated with the spiced butter mixture.
  • Bake the cereal mixture for an hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
  • Spread baked Chex mix out over wax paper and allow to cool completely before placing in an airtight container to store.

Notes

Feel free to mix and match your favorite cereals, crackers etc. to customize your mix. Just keep the general proportions the same.
We like using Goldfish crackers or something similar, because they are cute. However Cheez-Its, oyster crackers, bagel chips, or even Cheerios work in their place.

Thank you for this. I do not want microwaved chex mix. Oven baked all the way. I love your roasting pan. I use my blue turkey roasting pan.

Thank you for posting this. The name brand website doesn’t have the oven version, only microwave! What in the world?

    1. Isn’t that crazy? I still like the baked version better.

Hi! Not sure if I missed it, but how long will this last in and airtight container? Like if I sealed them in a foodsaver bag? I want to make them in advance to hand out in a week.

    1. You can store it for a couple of weeks, especially if they are sealed. Just make sure the Chex mix is completely cooled before you try to package it. That way there won’t be any steam or condensation and it will stay crispy longer. Enjoy!

It’s in the oven! So easy and going to be delicious! I did sub oyster/soup crackers for the wheat Chex’s and mixed nuts for peanuts. Yum!

    1. Both great substitutions, it’s going to be fabulous!

    2. @Tracy T, I do mixed nuts and sesame sticks instead of cheese crackers. yummmmmmm.

  7. Phaedra Chaney says:

Do you let this cool in the pan or spread it out on paper towels or parchment paper?

    1. That’s a great question. I usually spread it out so it cools more quickly and everything has a chance to get good and crunchy. Once it’s completely cool transfer it to airtight containers for storage.

  8. Is the pan covered or uncovered while in the oven?
