Classic Green Bean Casserole

There is something special about a classic green bean casserole. This is exactly how we made it for every Thanksgiving of my childhood and it is still a hit today. It is hard to beat the classic!

Did you grow up with with green bean casserole like I did? I know it is in vogue to try to make it without cream of mushroom soup, or to add strange things.

However, when it comes to holiday menus, especially the Thanksgiving menu, there is something to be said about sticking with the tried and true. This is how my family has been making green bean casserole for my whole life, and we aren’t about to change now!

I am not opposed to making other versions or even other green bean recipes. However, there would be a mutiny if this recipe wasn’t an offering at a big holiday meal.

As a kid, making the green bean casserole was usually one of my jobs. I loved helping to make special meals.

This is the recipe I used, but we usually at least doubled it and made it in a 9×13-inch pan. If a lot of family was in town, we might make two double batches to make sure everyone has a chance at some.

Now, my sister is usually the green bean casserole committee. I am usually making pumpkin pie, homemade rolls, and/or pecan pie.

When I realized I hadn’t shared the recipe with you, I knew I had to fix that immediately. So, we made some smoked turkey breast on the pellet grill and whipped up some mashed potatoes and had a mini Thanksgiving in September.

Of course it is also great with ham and would be a great addition to your Christmas or Easter menu as well. In fact, I can’t think of a time when green bean casserole isn’t a tasty addition to your side dish menu.

Classic Green Bean Casserole

Author: Carlee
Servings: 6 Servings
If you want to make the classic green bean casserole recipe that you grew up with, this is for you. It has the classic mix of green beans, cream of mushroom soup and french fried onions in one tasty side dish.
Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 25 minutes
Total: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 29 ounces canned green beans drained
  • 10.5 ounces cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 6 ounces french fried onions
Makes: 8 x 8inch rectangle

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350℉ and grease an 8-inch square pan or similar sized casserole dish.
  • Pour 29 ounces canned green beans (drained) into the pan.
  • Add the 10.5 ounces cream of mushroom soup, ½ cup milk, ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper and about ⅓ of the fried onions. Stir to combine.
  • Bake uncovered for about 25 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the remaining fried onions over the top of the casserole and return to the oven to bake for 5 more minutes.
  • Serve hot.

Notes

You can use two small cans of green beans or one family size can. Both standard cut green beans and french cut green beans work. Use whichever you prefer.
To double the recipe, just use a 9×13-inch pan and add a couple of minutes to the bake time.
If you want to make the green bean casserole in a crockpot, cook everything but the final sprinkling of fried onions on high for 2-3 hours. Add the final topping of fried onions just before serving.
To jazz it up a bit, you can stir some cheddar cheese into the green bean layer. Alternatively, add some cooked and crumbled bacon along with the fried onions. (Or do both!)
