If you need a little something sweet and refreshing, but you don’t want to heat up the kitchen, pineapple fluff is for you. With crushed pineapple as the star, it is creamy and fabulous.

You know midwesterners love a good fluff salad. I mean, is there anything that says pure creamy comfort more than a bowlful of fluff?

There is something nostalgic about recipes like these. Perhaps it’s because your grandma made them, or even if she didn’t you can picture someone’s grandma making them.

In the same way that Jello salads were all the rage, these fluff salads were the height of convenience and on the cutting edge of technology at some point. Now they are a delicious taste of something classic.

Fluffs are in the category of salads that aren’t really salad. You know the kind and it gives us the option to serve them as a side dish or as a simple dessert.

Fluff recipes typically include a combination of whipped cream or Cool Whip, marshmallows, pudding mix, and some form of fruit. And whether it’s classic orange fluffcherry cheesecake fluff, old-fashioned seafoam salad, or lesser-known s’mores fluff, we just seem to love them all.

Add-In Ideas

This particular recipe is super simple to put together and really features the pineapple. Though you can add more goodies if you would like.

That is one of the great things about fluff salads, they are super customizeable to your tastes or what you have on hand. Add extras for more flavor or texture if you prefer.

Here are a few ideas if you want to change up the base recipe:

  • a can of drained mandarin oranges
  • shredded coconut
  • chopped pecans
  • chopped maraschino cherries
  • sliced banana

Storage

Pineapple fluff should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

You can freeze some fluff if you don’t think you’ll eat it all in that time. But, I would recommend eating it from frozen rather than defrosting it.

It will be more like frozen fruit salad then. Defrosting it can cause the textures to change.

I love the Midwestern fluff/fruit salad.I made it with a few changes. I used banana pudding instead of vanilla. I mixed in some cottage cheese and did not add the marshmallows this time. I left everything else the same. Delicious!

    1. Banana pudding is such a good idea!! And so is cottage cheese. I am doing it that way next time!
