Almost like a two bite open faced hot ham and cheese sandwich, these crostini are the perfect snack or appetizer. They can find themselves right at home on a brunch spread just as easily as an evening hors d’oeuvers buffet. They are easy to put together and always well received.
Whether you are hosting a party or just looking for a fun snack for the family, these ham and cheese crostini can fit the bill. We have enjoyed them as a nosh during game day as well as serving them on our Easter buffet.
They are so easy to make, just take thin slices of baguette and spread a little bit of mayonnaise and mustard spread over them. Top that with thinly sliced ham.
The cheese comes next. We enjoy using some muenster on ours, but cheddar or Swiss would be lovely as well.
A quick trip to the oven, and these babies are ready to be enjoyed. It really doesn’t get much easier than that.
I have been tempted to make them again for several weeks now and finally had the chance. As I was digging the cheese and ham out of the fridge I spied the collection of quail eggs that was deposited in my fridge by MiMi.
She has been getting a ton of eggs lately and she knows Little Dude loves them. He enjoys using the quail egg scissors and making himself some scrambled eggs. He can do everything but turn on the stove himself!
I instantly knew that a quail egg perched on top of a crostini would be extra amazing. Just imagine serving them that way at your next brunch! Honestly I’d still serve them in the evening as well, I could eat them any time!
So I may have a new favorite way of eating the ham and cheese crostini. But don’t despair if you don’t have quail eggs, they are definitely delicious and totally worth making without as well!

As I was planning our Easter open house menu, it seemed like we had to have some ham somewhere! I wanted to keep everything bite sized though, I wasn’t in the mood for knife and fork food. I wanted everything to be easy to eat inside or out, at a table or wandering around.
These seemed like the perfect answer. Just a couple of bites of ham, mustard, cheese and crusty bread.
We went through three trays of them! They went perfectly with the cucumber bread.
Our friend Sam said these tied with the spinach dip for his favorite dish of the day!
These are great warm, but are still really good at room temperature. They are a great food to set out for a party!
- 1 baguette, thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup mustard (I used a brown honey mustard)
- 1/2 lb thinly sliced ham
- 4 oz sliced cheese (I used muenster)
- Spread a layer of baguette slices on a baking sheet and preheat the oven to 350° F
- Mix together mayonnaise and mustard and spread a thin layer on baguette slices
- Cut ham slices in half and fold to fit on bread slices
- Place a small slice of cheese over the ham
- Place tray in preheated oven and bake for 5-8 minutes or until cheese is nice and melted
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
