Great Grandma’s Grape Supreme Salad

My great-grandma’s grape supreme salad is loaded with fruit in a creamy dressing with marshmallows and nuts. It is part fruit salad, part fluff salad, and fully delicious. Those grandmas know what they are doing in the kitchen!

It is kind of funny that I am back with another grape salad this year. I went 11 years of sharing recipes without sharing a single grape salad recipe and now this is the second one in 6 months!

I shared a grape salad recipe in January that is probably what you think of when you think of grape salad. It is grapes in a sweetened cream cheese and sour cream dressing.

Other than the dressing and some pecans, it is fully grapes. And it is delicious.

As I was paging through my great-grandma’s cookbook, I saw this grape supreme salad and I was wondering how close it was. It turns out, this is something completely different and fully intriguing.

So, you know I had to make it. This recipe includes pineapple, bananas, and oranges in addition to the grapes.

In fact, the original recipe included only 1 cup of grapes but 2 cups of marshmallows and 3 bananas. So, grapes aren’t even the star of the show. 🤣

I increased the amount of grapes to 2 cups because there was plenty of dressing to coat the extras and it seemed like a serving of grape supreme salad should be guaranteed to at least get one grape!

Otherwise, this recipe is pretty straightforward. The dressing is made from a mix of Dream Whip, which is a powdered mix that you can find in the baking section of the grocery store.

You just add milk and a bit of vanilla and whip it up. It turns out similar to whipped topping in a lot of ways.

Then you mix in some cream cheese which helps to temper the sweetness and give it some body. After that, it is just a matter of adding the goodies.

Like most fluff salads, this is better after it has been chilled for an hour or two. The marshmallows soften a bit and kind of melt into the dressing a bit.

The only other change I made to the original recipe was to use pecans instead of walnuts. They are my preference and the nut I always have on hand.

The recipe had a note that black walnuts are especially good in this. So, feel free to use them instead if you have them.

The finished salad is really good. It has ambrosia vibes, is a bit tropical, and really delicious.

I can picture ladies of a certain era enjoying it as a way to close out a luncheon. It would also be great as part of a brunch spread or as an afternoon snack.

The salad will stay good in the fridge for a few days. However, the bananas will oxidize and brown a bit as the days go on. So, it looks best best fresh.

Do yourself a favor and make a batch soon. It is a fun way to turn a bowl of fruit into something special.
