If you like hiding a little bit of extra fruits and veggies in your recipes, grandma’s prune brownies are for you. The bits of prune add extra texture, flavor and of course a bit of fiber.

When thumbing through my grandma’s recipe box, this recipe for prune brownies caught my eye. It is hard to imagine sitting down with index cards and a typewriter to make recipe cards now.
Though it does feel like it has to have been a recipe she liked to go through to effort to type it out to put in the box. There were almost no mistakes without being able to use backspace, too.
I am a relatively decent typist, but I would be afraid to count how many time I hit the backspace button while writing just about anything. So, I am not so sure I would consider myself a good typist if I were on a typewriter.

Anyway, I love the idea of sharing recipes in that way. Sitting down to write or type out a recipe to give to a friend does make it extra special.
I suppose, in a way, I kind of do that too. I find recipes that I think would be fun to share with you and sit down to type them out so you can enjoy them too.
I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree after all.
Anyway, these brownies were fun. There isn’t much chocolate in them but the prunes do manage to help give more fudgy flavor and texture that helps boost it a bit.
They still taste like a treat. LD and I both really enjoyed them. Of all the ways there are to eat some prunes, these brownies are our new favorite!

Carlee’s Tips and Tricks
For a richer chocolate flavor, melt 2 ounces of chocolate into the butter instead of one. Otherwise you could stir in some chocolate chips if you want to.

I was temped to add more chocolate several times along the way but wanted to keep the recipe as close to grandma’s as possible. Though in general, as far as I’m concerned more chocolate is usually a good idea!
I didn’t soak my prunes because they were very soft and “juicy.” If your prunes are on the dry side, soak them in some hot water and then drain them before using them.
I would think you could pretty easily sub in dates for the prunes if you want. They would be delicious.

You could easily make this into a one bowl recipe. Just melt the chocolate and butter in a microwave safe bowl and add everything else in order.
If you like nuts in your brownies, feel free to add some here too. Pretty much anything goes!
That’s about it. This is a pretty simple recipe that is a great way to add some prunes to your menu while still getting a treat. Now, onto the recipe!
