Maid Rite sandwiches are a staple here in the Midwest. There is a restaurant chain by the same name and people love them.

We used to frequent the local Maid Rite restaurant when family was in town visiting. It was one of those places people had to go when they came back.

If you aren’t from the Midwest, maybe the term isn’t familiar to you. Similar items might be sold as a loose meat sandwich or tavern burger.

The key to a good Maid Rite sandwich filling is letting the beef flavor really shine through. Of course, there is a little bit of seasoning to enhance it, but the ground beef crumbles are the star of the show.

That is what sets it apart from a sloppy joe or other crumbled beef sandwiches. There isn’t a sauce coating the meat or a ton of add ins.

Making Maid Rites in a Slow Cooker

We have a skillet Maid Rite recipe that we love. It is a great way to get dinner on the table in under 30 minutes.

But sometimes you need to feed a crowd, or the time constraints are such that it is easier to do the prep work ahead of time so getting dinner on the table can be even quicker later. That is where the crockpot comes into play.

This recipe is quick to put together. The only work that needs to be done is dicing an onion.

In a real pinch, you could even use dried minced onion if you wanted too. Otherwise, just put the raw ground beef and the seasonings in the slow cooker insert.

Stir it all together until the water is kind of absorbed into the meat. That is what will help you get small crumbles later.

Then let it cook on high for 3-4 hours. Stir it once along the way if you can to help break it up. However, if you can’t, it will still be fine.

When it is time to eat, just use a slotted spoon to pile the beef crumbles on a bun. Add a side dish or two and dinner is done!

Tips and Tricks

You can use soy sauce instead of Worcestershire sauce if you would like. Both add that extra savory umami that makes the beef shine.

Use a slotted spoon to serve the meat, that will help to keep the buns from getting too soggy.

If you need even more Maid Rites, you can double the recipe. Just add an hour or two to the cook time to make sure it has a chance to cook through.

The cooked meat freezes well. You can put it in airtight containers and keep it in the refrigerator for easy meals later.

Or use the extra ground beef crumbles in other recipes that start with browning ground beef. You can easily toss it in pasta recipes. Or drain it and add taco seasoning to turn it into tacos.

You can add a simple tomato sauce to make some leftovers into cola sloppy joes. Or turn them into a variety of other dinners.

  • 3 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely diced
  • teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground black pepper

  • 2 Tablespoons prepared yellow mustard
  • 3 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

  • Serve by using a slotted spoon to scoop the ground beef mixture onto buns. Add your favorite toppings and enjoy.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Or put in a freezer-safe container and freeze for several months.
Soy sauce works as a great replacement for the Worcestershire sauce if you prefer.
