There are some circumstances where doing it yourself is actually easier than done for you. This homemade fajita seasoning may be one of those things.

If you are like me, sometimes it is a struggle to remember what you already have at home when you are at the grocery store. So, when you decide at the last minute to add fajitas to the menu for the week, knowing whether or not you have packets of seasoning at home is a bit of a crapshoot.

Inevitably, if I pick some up, there are already 5 in the cabinet. But, if I skip them, we don’t have any.

Luckily, all of that back and forth is mute if you know how to make your own. So you can save yourself the grocery store struggle!

Make it Your Own

The heat in this seasoning mix will depend greatly on the chili powder that you use. You can make it spicier by adding some cayenne or more mild by making sure you use a nice mild chili powder.

You could also add a pinch of crushed red pepper if you want a little more kick.

Make sure to smell your spices before you use them. If they start losing their aroma, it is time to replace them.

I sometimes stir a teaspoon of cornstarch into the mix. It helps everything to stick to the meat a little bit better and thickens up the juices from the vegetables a bit.

Using Your Fajita Seasoning

To replace a one ounce packet of fajita seasoning, use about 3 Tablespoons of your spice mix.

It is great on chicken, shrimp, or beef fajitas. You can also just use it on veggies for an easy side dish or for vegetarian fajitas.

You can also use it jazz up everything from scrambled eggs to grilled veggies. Once you start using it, you will come up with all kinds of ways to use it.

Shelf-life: Homemade seasonings keep really well. If you use fresh spices, a mix like this can last up to 6 months in the cabinet.

Making More

I recommend making a small batch the first time to make sure you like the flavor profile as is. Then, scale the recipe up once you have it dialed in.

Then you can have homemade fajitas whenever you want without any extra effort!

Using Your Fajita Seasoning

Of course, you can use your spice mix to make homemade fajitas. But, there are so many other fun ways to enjoy it.

You can also make sheet pan chicken fajitas if you aren’t in the mood for standing at the stove. Sheet pan shrimp fajitas are another great option.

You can also use this mix in place of taco seasoning in other recipes. They are different, but close enough that it can be used without problem.

How to store:

Keep your fajita seasoning in a jar with an airtight lid. Like other spices, it should be stored in a cool, dry, dark place, like your pantry or spice cabinet.

Total: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 Tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 Tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 Tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 Tablespoon salt

Instructions

  • Mix together all ingredients in a small bowl and stir until fully combined.
1 Tablespoon chili powder, 1 Tablespoon smoked paprika, 1 Tablespoon ground cumin, 1 Tablespoon garlic powder, 1 Tablespoon salt
  • Store in a sealed jar or dish in the pantry for up to a month.

Notes

Be sure to grab quality spices for your seasoning. This ensures optimum flavor. Cheaper seasonings often lack in flavor and quality, making the seasoning taste weak and lacking.
You can use normal paprika in place of smoked paprika, but smoked paprika does add an extra layer of flavor that is really good in fajitas.
Use a finer grain salt in this recipe. Coarse salt may create uneven seasoning in your final dish.
Squeeze some fresh lime over your fajitas for an extra burst of fresh flavor. Citrus goes really well with these flavors.
