Make your own M&M cookie mix in a jar. These jars are great for gifting (think teacher or neighbor gifts or a sweet hostess gift), or make them for yourself and keep them in your pantry for easy cookies later. Turning the mix into cookies is super simple and they taste great!
In a small bowl, stir together the 1⅔ cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, ½ teaspoon baking soda, and ¼ teaspoon salt. Pour into the bottom of a clean quart jar. Gently wiggle the jar a bit to make sure there is an even layer of the flour mixture.
Gently layer the 1 cup M&Ms on top of the flour layer. Try not to pour them in too quickly, as this may cause them to sink into the flour layer more.
Continue to layer the other ingredients on top. I did ⅓ cup light brown sugar, then ½ cup granulated sugar, then ½ cup chocolate chips. You can do whatever order you think looks nice.
Put the lid on the jar and tie a tag with the baking instructions to it.
Baking the Cookies
Melt the ½ cup butter in a medium or large microwave safe bowl. Allow to cool until just warm.
Add the 2 large eggs and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Stir to combine.
Pour in the contents of the quart jar. Stir until combined.
Chill for at least 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350℉.
Use a medium cookie scoop to portion out about 1½ Tablespoons of dough. Place cookie dough about 2 inches apart on a cookie pan.
Bake for 8-10 minutes or until baked to your liking. Allow to cool on the pan for a couple of minutes, then move to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
These homemade mixes can be kept in the pantry for 6-9 months. So you can make a bunch ahead of time if you would like. You can use all M&M or all chocolate chips if you want to. I like having a bit of color, but also like using some mini chocolate chips to distribute chocolate throughout.
