Did you know that you can make homemade sweetened condensed milk in your own kitchen? That's right, it only takes 4 common ingredients to make your own liquid gold!
Put ¾ cup granulated sugar and 2 cups whole milk in medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat until it just starts to bubble, then reduce the heat to medium low. The mixture will foam up, so be sure to have room for the mixture to grow in the pan.
Simmer over medium-low heat until the volume is reduced to 1 cup, this should take between 30 and 45 minutes.
Remove from the heat and stir in the 4 Tablespoons butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
Store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Stir before using.
Notes
This recipe makes 1 1/4 cups of sweetened condensed milk which is enough to replace a 14 oz. can of sweetened condensed milk. I used salted butter. If you use unsalted, you may want to add a tiny pinch of salt to the milk mixture.
