Homemade biscuits and sausage gravy is the ultimate in hearty comfort food breakfasts. Making fluffy biscuits and an easy creamy sawmill gravy with bits of breakfast sausage is easy and the results are delicious and filling.
Preheat oven to 450°F and sheet pan with parchment paper.
Whisk together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, ½ teaspoon baking soda, and ½ teaspoon salt.
Grate in frozen ½ cup butter and toss to coat in flour mixture.
Stir in 1 cup buttermilk.
Either drop dollops of dough onto pan, form biscuits with your hands or roll and cut biscuits with a biscuit cutter. Whatever your preference is will work.
Bake 15-18 minutes until golden brown, brush tops with 2 tablespoons melted butter, serve hot.
Gravy
Brown 1 lb. breakfast sausage in a large skillet over medium heat. Crumble the sausage as it cooks.
Sprinkle in the ⅓ cup all-purpose flour, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon dry onion and stir until sausage is well coated. Allow it to cook for a minute or two.
Whisk in 3 cups whole milk a little at a time and cook until the gravy thickens.
Season with salt & pepper to taste.
Serve immediately over warm biscuits and enjoy!
Notes
If you don't have buttermilk, you can use milk soured with a teaspoon or vinegar or lemon juice.
